whilst deep in the muddy terrain of conversation, we happened across this thread and decided to run with it!
what are your favourite band names. this doesn't have to be your favourite band - just the actual name.
Is Gorky's Zygotic Munki a great name? or is it just crap?! Procol Harem - great name, or should have stayed the name of a cat? is The Who just the best name ever, or was it just a lack of decent name and originality in picking a name?
What do you think? post here and let us know!

Gorky's Zygotic Munki - even though I 'get' it now I still think it's bizarre as hell. Pretty to look at, though.
Procol Harum - Never thought about it. I did a bit of reasearch and learned that it was actually supposed to be "Procul Harun" - Latin - meaning "beyond these things". Still very blah to me, but whatever.
The Who - now that I like. Was it you I was chatting with about Kit Lambert coming up with the name because he thought their existing name - High Numbers - was too ambitious? Good call on his part.
One of the weirdest band names I ever heard was Screaming Iguanas of Love. They were fairly popular when I was in college in South Florida many moons ago.
More popular --
Butthole Surfers - I'm not even going there.
The Flaming Lips - soothed by Vaseline?
Spooky Tooth - I'm pretty sure I used to know the origin of that name. Or maybe I'm thinking of Soft Machine/Matching Mole. (Fun story there. Sort of.)
Stone Temple Pilots - I read somewhere that they just wanted to be able to use the initials STP. I love that band name. The band, not so much.
Ned's Atomic Dustbin - I actually like that name.
Toad the Wet Sprocket - Can't argue with Monty Python. That's a bad bad name.

True about The Who, very ambitious! and yeah - we did speak about Kit Lambert a while ago... Procul Harun - yeah, it is pretty 'blah!' Gorky is odd, but they're GOGS! so they're bound to be odd! good selection of band names there! I always liked Ned's Atomic Dustbin, too! dunno why - it's a rubbish name! (gerrit? ah!) Screaming Iguanas of Love is great! one of my favourite band names is Death Cab For Cutie, for oddness - and the fact it's stolen from the Bonzo Dog Dog Doo Dah Band, which brings me to another band name that's fabulous! placebo is a pretty cool band name... pearl jam - didn't Eddie Vedder (or one of the band members) get it from his grandmother's name? and I guess his favourite thing to spread on toast! ;D

I was just coming back to mention Pearl Jam! I love that name. I've always said that - something about the word combination just kicks ass. The actual "meaning" goes right out the window.
The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band takes the cake. No contest.
I'm surprised you haven't mentioned Mull Historical Society. Blah name, great sound. Who wouldda thunkit?

And since we're in this place, I might as well add that the name The Verlaines always intrigued me, right from the start. It conjured up images of erudition - I knew they had to brilliant. And I love being right. ;D

Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band does take the cake and the biscuits and runs off with some hot dogs and Pedigree Chum dog food too! (that's one hungry dog!) Mull Historical Society yes! it is a good name! I just don't know why, I always thought "bah, that's boring!" - then I heard the guy's music, and he rocks! so he's fine by me! more power to him!

And I love being right. ;D true true! I thought someone would eventually mention The Verlaines! always conjures up images of Mr Paul Verlaine, Mr Arthur Rimbaud and a gun!

The gun part still scares me. A little bit o' trivia, off-topic -- did you know that Leonardo di Caprio played Rimbaud in the bio-pic Total Eclipse back in '95? It doesn't seem to get mentioned much. (Oooh, I wonder why. ). David Thewlis played Paul Verlaine and later went on to star in the remake of The Island of Dr Moreau. Back on-topic -- I just found this marvelous site on band name origins -- www.heathenworld.com/bandname/Hours of fun ahead. Wheee!

I quite like that Mahatma Gerber one. If I ever develop musical talent can I steal it for my own band? ;D Actually, Aloha Kincaid and Orbiting Wyoming sound pretty neat too! Hmmmm....

well opiate, you'll have to cross that bridge when you come to it; and it's going to cost you a hefty toll! actually, don the ice cream man was a name i gave to david kilgour when he was on tour with the chills in 92. he used it interchangeablywith Kiss Me You Fool for the name of his band at the time. This all followed on the heels of my naming the able tasman's 'somebody ate my planet' record, which opened to door all the subsequent dubbings.
originally i'd offered 'first steps and falst alarms' to graeme for a verlaines compilation and he was keen on using it but david ended up taking it for his own compilation, as well as later using another one i came up with: 'six string sombrero'.
but it's been a mighty long time since anyone's asked for a proper dubbing, so maybe i'll let you use one of them. actually mahatma gerber was, now that i remember it, something a friend of mine in a band called uke fink had come up with. but it's so good i put it on the list anyway.
alright.
adios! steven

oops, that's supposed to be Maybe I'll Come Home In The Spring
(this being a thinly veiled flying nun related band name, which i leave up to the inquisitive to figure out...you know, like, what's the connection.)

I'd like to be in a band called The Absurd, if I had any musical talent that is, which unfortunately, I don't. so there ends that dream ;D

Fine choices indeed! I'm still trying to figure out the Flying Nun connection. *dons detective cap* Steve, I'd let you pick my band name anyday. You certainly have a knack. Of course, the only use I'd have for such a name would be for a fictious band in one of my stories. (I actually came up with a few decent ones when I was working on a novel eons ago. I surprised myself - I'm usually bad at picking like titles and I usually "borrow" them from elsewhere. But I digress... I came across a mention of that Able Tasmans album for the first time the other day when I was looking for info on Jane Dodd. I'd say 'small world' but given the nature of the board it probably isn't. Cool all the same, though.

the best bands are the ones that are really only imaginary ones. no fighting, no touring, no lugging equipment around, no being ignored, no bad reviews. just pure invincibility which cannot be shaken. not to mention a very hard to find back catalog of recordings which, having never existed, will lend a sense of mystery to them.
hey man, i like your band. groovy!
