I want to come up with an 'essential Gen-X' thingy for my site. which is exactly what it says on the tin.
Essential literature, music, films, and other stuff for the Gen-Xers.
As a start point, this is what I've come up with...
Lit:
Generation X by Douglas Coupland Fight Club by Chuck whatshisname.
Music:
Nirvana
Films:
Reality Bites Slacker Kevin Smith films, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, etc.
So, let's come up with the definitive list! or not... depending on if we feel like it... whatever

lol Just remember that I'm from Generation When-Dinosaurs-Roamed-the-Earth so my contributions might be suspect. Lit:Trainspotting - Irvine Welsh Less Than Zero - Bret Easton Ellis (too old?) Music:Sub Pop Records, Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam, Temple of the Dog, Mudhoney, Alice in Chains, R.E.M., The Pixies Film:Trainspotting Dazed and Confused Nowhere (1997 film - I think everyone hates this but me) The Doom Generation (another James Duval film) Singles I'll post more as I think of 'em.

They be some fine choices!
Would Fear and Loathing fit into the Gen-X category, do you think? Both film and book.

Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas © 1971 by Hunter S. Thompson That's older than I am! Disqualified! Also the back cover has a quote from the NY Times Book Review that sums it up as "The best book of the dope decade." I take that to mean the late '60s - early '70s. I think the loose definition of Generation X refers to people born between 1965 and 1981. [ cite: www.wordiq.com/definition/Generation_X ] I might allow the movie for the sake of Monsieur Depp but I ain't feelin' it.

True, true! I was a bit dubious about Fear & Loathing, anyway.
Technically I'm not Gen X, since I wasn't a teen during the 80's. I read ages ago that it included people born between 1967 and 1977. I'm borderline X/Y, I guess - hence my confusion about stuff! ;D
Any more thoughts on what we should include/exclude?
