Oh no... I hadn't even heard - just read it here. (I've been out all day.) John Peel has fascinated me for years - he was directly responsible for my obsession with the BBC as a whole. A sad day indeed.

"You may have detected a bit of surface noise there, but then life itself is not without surface noise." - John Peel after playing a scratchy record. RIP Mr. Peel, the greatest champion of rock and roll there ever was...

A sad day indeed. very sad yeah, he was a great guy and loved music. he was always ahead of what the rest of mainstream radio was playing - I think he was the first person to play the sex pistols - god save the queen on radio. plus he was one of the first to play things like reggae and hip hop on British mainstream radio back in the 70's and early 80's. plus he gave Joy Division their first chance on Radio 1 too, so that instantly makes him a legend ;D

I was thinking about the first time I realized what "Peel Sessions" were and how excited I got over the whole thing. This was the early 90s (yes, I'm slow) and I don't even remember the name of the band (Noise on Noise or something like that) but I was wholly intrigued by the concept. Later on when I heard the name Maida Vale (location of the Radio One studios) I'd get excited all over again by random connections, like a house somewhere up the coast that bears the name, or the Italian village mentioned in Gay Talese's "Unto the Sons". ~sigh~
John Peel will live on. This is not the end.
