in the spirit of the film/book High Fidelity, I think we should play the game! 'top 5, side 1, track 1' game, or 'first song on a cd album' as it is in this day and age of non-vinyl. who wants to play?!

*raises hand* Me! Me! Edited to add: Bearing in mind that I haven't seen the movie and never got past the first third of the book... I'll be following your lead. Now start leading. *drum roll*

schweet! ok! I'll go first, my Top 5 (right now!) would be:
5. Ripples by Trembling Blue Stars (from Broken by Whispers) 4. The Black Amnesias by Hope of the States (from The Lost Riots) 3. Stars of Track & Field by Belle & Sebastian (from If You're Feeling Sinister) 2. Debaser by The Pixies (from Doolittle) 1. Yes by Manic Street Preachers (from Yes)

So this is just opening tracks, right? Doesn't count if it falls in the middle of the album? Ok, here goes... 5. "Animal Instinct" - Cranberries (Bury the Hatchet) 4. "Surefire" - Econoline Crush (The Devil You KNow) 3. "Dumpweed" - Blink-182 (Enema of the State) 2. "Lost Horizons" - Gin Blossoms (New Miserable Experience) 1. "Yes" - Manic Street Preachers (The Holy Bible) This was TOUGH. I had to cut this down from a list of about 20. Can I list some of my runners-up? I think I will. ;D Honorable mention: "Gloom Junky" - The Verlaines (Ready to Fly) "I Surrender" - Rainbow (Difficult to Cure) "En Sten Vid En Sjö I En Skog" - Gyllene Tider (Finn 5 Fel) No One is to Blame" - Howard Jones (Action Relay) "Smells Like Teen Spirit" - Nirvana (Nevermind) I won't bore you with the rest...

Yep. You can't beat "Yes" . And I was surprised that "Lost Horizons" didn't make yours. Ditto "Gloom Junky". (But you don't have the album, do you? I keep forgetting...) Those others must be awesome, though. I only recognized two and I can't remember "Ripples" much.

I didn't take any of my cds, I always forget... hope of the states is pretty good! comes into that "post-rock" category without being..... shit! I don't really like mogwai, never heard anything by godspeed you black emperor! and I like the band Explosions in the Sky - apart from that I know nothing about post-rock or any of that kinda thing. and of course belle & sebastian kick arse, goes without saying

I checked out Godspeed You Black Emperor! recently. Can't remember much about them though, except that people seem confused about where the exclamation point goes, and they're a fully orchestral rock band. Oddly enough I wasn't in the mood. I think the band has like fifty members (okay, nine), no vocals except in occasional samples and they're considered a political band. Now that's some feat. No lyrics but they get the message across? I'll probably give them another go, after I'm done with Phish. BTW I'd never heard the term "post rock" until now. Interesting one. THR is *so* educational.
